The Ship Graveyard – Some Have Been Waiting Since The 1960s

© KFSS

This graveyard is one of several ship graveyards in the Vladivostok area. It is located in the Bay of Labor on Russkiy island, Russia.

Most of the ships “buried” there were part of the Pacific Fleet. Removed from duty and decomisioned, the ships here have been waiting to be recycling for more than forty years – since 1974.

As of January 2000, there were 42 submerged or semi-submerged vessels in this bay. The types of ships vary a lot, from destroyers and submarines to fishing vessels and hydrographic survey vessels.

This bay is of course a treasure ground of scrap metal, both for officials and “metal hunters.” However, it is very hard to obtain, which is largely the reason why so little has been salvaged. However, in the last few years the recycling process has picked up some pace, with efforts being made to even lift whole ship carcasses out of water.

New ships occasionally arrive to this graveyard, waiting for their turn to be recycled. But will they ever “live” to see their turn?
