Derelict Chateau Assassin’s Creed

Residents of the nearby village keep a close eye on the castle

Assassin’s Creed Castle was built in the 18th century in the center of a huge estate. It is of an uncertain provenance: some sources suggest that the period of construction was the 17th century.

However, other sources state that the castle was built by a family who acquired the land only in the 18th century.

Family

The family who owned the land wanted to imitate the Palace of Versailles. They certainly had a distinguished enough history, with previous family members having been riders, knights, lords, and aldermen. There was also a regimental captain, lieutenant, secretary of the king, and a mayor among their ranks.

Many of the family members joined the French army. For their military service, they received awards such as the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre. The family also owned many lands in France, a fact which can be gleaned from military and church writings of the time.

However, at present, the building and its gardens are in an abandoned state, despite being partially registered in the register of historical monuments. For this reason, the chateau is well known in the world of urban research.

Residents of the nearby village keep a close eye on the castle and its garden, often calling the police if they see anything suspicious.

Nowadays

There are few construction records and data about the various changes made in the castle’s history. The main feature of the castle was its gardens which contained several fountains. The designer of the garden also wanted to imitate Versailles. A farm and the stables are located to one side of the castle.

The dilapidated state of the castle means it is only really interesting to tourists and lovers of abandoned places. However, no one can figure out why the castle of a family with descendants still living is now abandoned.

The original beauty of the castle is difficult to see from the outside when visitors are surrounded by broken fountains and overgrown gardens. Inside is where you truly get a hint as to the castle’s former glory.

Beneath the castle is a cellar which still contains a billiard table. In fact, throughout the castle, including the attic, you can find a lot of family items. The interior of the castle looks like it was not touched at all, and some rooms are full of a variety of books.

Even today, there is the opportunity to learn more about the family who owned the castle and the professions of the people who lived there as you wander among the rooms. You can even find pictures of the family in the photo albums.

There are several theories as to why the castle is now abandoned. Perhaps inheritance fees for restoring a family castle were high and the heirs could not pay them. Or maybe the maintenance of the castle required a significant investment for which no one was willing to take responsibility.

A few years ago, the castle was put up for sale. However, at the time of writing, it has not been sold.
